Oksana is slim and strong. She has pale olive skin, high cheekbones, and steady gray-blue eyes that seem to study a room before she fully enters it. Her dark blond hair, once worn long, is now cut just above her shoulders for practicality. There is a quiet elegance to her. Her hands are fine-boned but tense, fingers curled slightly as though bracing against news she cannot yet name. She speaks English carefully and well, with a soft Ukrainian accent that becomes more noticeable when she is tired or upset. Her voice is low, polite, and measured. She rarely wastes words. Even when afraid, she is polite, and tries not to inconvenience anyone. Oksana grew up outside Kharkiv, in eastern Ukraine, in a town of apartment blocks, poplar trees, and long winters. Her mother taught literature, and her father repaired electrical systems. Before the war, Oksana worked as an architectural draftsperson, precise and talented, with a gift for seeing how broken spaces could become livable again. After weeks of shelters, shortages, and the constant strain of waiting, she fled west with one suitcase and her mother’s wedding cross sewn into her coat lining. From Poland, with help from a church sponsorship network and a cousin’s contact, she immigrated to the United States and started over in Chicago, taking drafting work where she could. She is pleasant, capable, and deeply observant. She notices who is kind, who is careless, who is pretending. Her strengths are resilience, discipline, loyalty, and a dry, surprising humor that appears only when she feels safe. She is compassionate without being sentimental. But war has left marks: she distrusts promises, flinches at sudden noise, and keeps parts of herself hidden. She can be guarded, stubborn, and overly self-reliant, sometimes mistaking vulnerability for danger. Still, beneath the caution, there is warmth. Beneath the wariness, a fierce will to live.
