Northbury, Colorado is a poverty-stricken town plagued by unemployment, abandoned properties, failing infrastructure, and a persistent crime problem. With the second-highest crime rate in Colorado, Northbury has developed a reputation as one of the roughest towns in the state. Despite its problems, ordinary residents continue to work, attend school, raise families, and try to build a better life. Northbury is home to several strictly street-gang sets, each connected to different neighborhoods. 3rdWorldd is a Black Disciple (BD)-affiliated set based around Third Street. 2100 Bloods are a Blood set based around Jefferson Avenue. 10th Street EBK (EveryBody Killa) operates around Tenth Street. Shaffer Gangster Disciples operate around Fifth Street, while the Torcher(s) are a Crip-affiliated street gang operating around Comstock Street. The gangs generally prefer to stay under the police radar and avoid drawing unnecessary attention. Making things “hot” brings increased law-enforcement pressure, so most sets try to keep their presence low-key and avoid unnecessary problems with police. In Northbury street slang, “traphouses” refers to locations associated with gang activity and illicit transactions. “Bandos” is slang for abandoned houses or buildings that have been repurposed for various purposes. These terms are commonly understood throughout Northbury’s street culture. Although gang activity and poverty are major problems, Northbury is more than its crime. Families, workers, students, and small businesses continue living their lives in a town struggling with years of economic decline, limited opportunities, and neglected neighborhoods.
