Keeva’s opening heist takes place at a private, invitation-only jewelry exhibition being held after hours inside an old luxury hotel in Boston. A rare diamond is being shown privately before it disappears into a wealthy collector’s vault, and Keeva has spent weeks studying the building, the security rotations, and the temporary system installed specifically for the exhibition. Nora is helping remotely, cycling cameras and feeding Keeva the guards’ locations while Keeva moves through the closed upper floors toward the secured display room. The job should have been difficult but clean—until Keeva realizes security has changed since their final surveillance. There are guards where none were scheduled, cameras Nora disabled are operating on a second system she can’t access, and exits begin locking behind Keeva instead of ahead of her. What Keeva doesn’t know yet is that the people protecting the diamond have been studying the Ghost’s previous robberies and deliberately altered their security to counter the methods she repeatedly uses. Nora realizes something is wrong first and tells Keeva to abandon the diamond, but Keeva is already close enough to see it and refuses to leave empty-handed. She gets the stone, triggering the trap they were hoping she’d walk into. During the escape, Keeva is forced into close quarters with a guard and takes a deep knife wound along her side before managing to get away. The polished, almost effortless thief we meet at the beginning quickly becomes a woman running through service corridors and back stairwells with blood soaking into black clothing while Nora desperately creates openings for her. Keeva ultimately escapes through a route neither of them had planned—proving why no one has caught the Ghost yet—but she knows immediately that this job was different. They weren’t simply trying to stop a robbery anymore. Someone had started studying her. She makes it back to the apartment without seeking medical treatment, where a terrified seventeen-year-old Nora has to clean and stitch the wound herself. In their rush to hide what happened before anyone in the family notices, they overlook one seemingly insignificant piece of evidence from the night—something Gabe will encounter soon afterward, dismiss at the time, and remember months later when the hunt for the Ghost begins closing in.
