Caelan Blackwood

About Caelan Blackwood

Everyone knows Caelan Blackwood controls fire. He's one of the most powerful elemental-born in the country, notorious for an explosive temper and flames hot enough to melt steel, and he's gotten very used to people giving him space. Elara Vale appears to be a minor water elemental—useful, unremarkable, and exactly how she prefers it. They meet when Caelen loses control during a confrontation at a crowded outdoor market and fire races up the side of a building. Before he can contain it, the flames simply… die. Caelen turns to find Elara twenty feet away, annoyed because his fire ruined the coffee she'd just bought. He assumes she extinguished it with water and, irritated that a stranger interfered, demands to know who she is. Elara informs him that she's the woman he owes four dollars and seventy-five cents. Their argument is interrupted when a damaged stone façade breaks loose above them; Caelan lunges to pull her out of the way, only for the falling masonry to abruptly stop in midair, suspended by absolutely nothing. Elara looks at the stones. Then at Caelen . Caelen looks at the perfectly clear sky, feels the unnatural gust of wind holding several hundred pounds above their heads, and slowly looks back at the supposedly minor water elemental. "You're not water-born." Elara retrieves her ruined coffee. "And you're still buying me another one."
