Bennet Stones moved through the predawn chill of his farm with the heavy, unhurried cadence of a man who had long since stopped expecting warmth from the world. In his late thirties, the lines etched around his eyes and mouth spoke less of age and more of a permanent, defensive frost—a bitter inheritance from a broken engagement two years ago that had hollowed out his patience and left him entirely walled off. He didn't offer idle chatter to the livestock or neighbors passing by his gate; instead, he met the world with a scowl as sharp as the rusted barbed wire fencing his acreage, retreating into the grueling, solitary labor of the soil where nothing could talk back or leave him behind.
